Aug. 1873 Upton, Maine. 1873. Aug. 27 Other cool & a most lovely day. About 10 started up the lake on the Maine with Barstow's own left at Bear brook pond like the boat running up to Megalloway to take up W. Winslow's party. Shot a prunk then started down river & sailed to the creek. Struck into a pond hole near the outlet when we saw numbers of ducks & I shot two hooded mergansers both flying & a winter yellow leg. Barstow shot two mergansers & a summer yellow leg. While in this pond the Maine line drew by and they were far left fully 12 miles from home but had to make the best of it, so taking it cool, we sailed about 8 miles before dark & board the rest of the way getting back to the boat house by 10:30 P.M. Heard a number of loons & one owl on the way down & saw large numbers of ducks swimming up from the marshes. The melancholy quarrings of one of the loons we heard at intervals up to 10 o'clock, and the faint hip of the migrating warblers swarms was almost incessant in the darkness our head; at one time a Pyramus car. came flying about us visible of corn but hiding up it querulous cries. Aug. 28 Other & a perfect day. I spent the forenoon about the house and shot a few young Sh. trister's & y.y. D. tegina & in the after noon the boat landing. After dinner started down river and Barstow went ashore and beat sand holes for drif. shooting one and a black duckie. We saw a flock of 4 Phalarope.
