Summary of field trip in NE BA province near San Miguel
del Monte, Gnal La Valle, and San Clemente del Tuyu,
Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina
Sept 16-17
BA to San Miguel del Monte [where we spent friday
evening], from there to San Clemente del Tuyu,
stopping en route just west of Castelli for Saturday evening,
and back to Gnal La Valle for Sunday night. Monday morning
we returned to BA via the coast road through
La Plata. The following species were identified:
Rhea americana - by road on Route 11 near Esquina de Crotto, ~20
Nothura maculosa - seen ahead throughout trip
Podiceps major - San Miguel del Monte (SMM), at G.L., and SC at sea
Podiceps rolland - SMM and GL
Podilymbus podiceps - SMM abundant, GL less so but present
Diomedea melanophrys - 4-8 seen at SC at sea
Phalacrocorax olivaceus - 1 at SC
Ardea cocoi - all over, solitary, 8 all told
Egretta alba - all over
Egretta thula - all over
Ixobrychus involucris - one at GL
Euxenura maguari - all over
Plegadis chihi - flights at SMM, less common at GL
Ajaia ajaia - 100 in flock near GL, appear to be nesting in tide
Phoenicopterus chilensis - 28 at SMM, 4 juv.
Chauna torquata - all over, most at GL
Cygnus melancoryphus - all over, large chicks seen at GL
Coscoroba coscoroba - lots at GL, in pairs, SMM
Dendrocygna bicolor - flights at SMM.
