J.P./Myers 1974 Journal Estancia Medeland, 35 Km S. of Juancho by rond, Pto de Madariaga, Pcia de Bs. Aire Argentina 29 November crityd 1) distance to water 2) % cover a) vegetation b) mud c) dirt, d) water - done by placing a 20 cm x 20cm grid over the bill point and counting the number of 2x2 cm squares falling within each category. Read directly to % as there are 100 squares. 3) penetrability: depth to which a vertically dropped brass bar 100.5 cm long (weight) and 0.25" diameter (weighing 268 gm) will penetrate the substrate. Recorded in cm. The tip of the rod is sharpened to a point. It is held vertically, and dropped from a standard height of 46 cm by raising it to a standard point in a brass tube of 3/8" inner diameter + 52 cm long. [illegible] 4) water depth - sampled at 5 points - a) at the bill b) in a pattern around the bill: [illegible] 5) microtopographic variation. - measured at same points as b) in water depth pattern - measured as distance to a bar held horizontally 10cm above the point of bill contact 6) vegetation horizontal density - # of contacts with vegetation a 3/16" bar made in 20cm, 10cm on each side of the bill. Area 2 sample, one in direction as indicated for water depth above soil 7) time, wind, temperature (air in shade at 10cm above substrate, and substrate)
