(19) flycatcher, contrasting slightly to the Rendova type, having white feathering almost completely around the eye where the Rendova species shows the white patch up to the eye. The long-tail is quite in evidence and I noticed more sox here and on Rendova in the young brown mottled plumage. He returned late and found a few others trading with the Captain. Bananas, papaw, eggs, & two fowls were secured and a quantity of Kan-kan (sweet potatoes) Biscuits, cooking time, bread, tinned goods, & shilling, were asked in exchange. Only a few spoke pid- gin and so the words they are a rapid crowd as typical of the Mill- oldest Mission influence. June 5 - All landed early and had a good day. The island of New Georgia is the largest of the New Georgia group, of which it is the focal land mass. It is approximately 70 miles long and measures 26 miles across in the northern end, backing the Rubiyana lagoon and about 15 miles for its greatest length to the southward, backing the Marovo lagoon. The is- land runs NW & SE. The highest land is 2700 feet at the southern portion. There are several peaks in the Karu Mahenta range that top 2000 symining with Mt. Vena Ravi at the center of the widest part. All are con- tinuously located, which will make the maximum elevation difficult to reach from the shore in one day, especially as there are no longer any natives living in the bush and consequently all trails are difficult. The distribution of the avifanna impresses me to be similar to Vella Lavella where there is little high land over 2000 and uniform vegetation and drainage. This side of New Georgia is filled with rivers, all of which de- posits sediment in the lagoon bottom, making navigation somewhat precarious. But I do not consider the elevation too high enough to recreate a camp. A fairly good indication on any island having max- imun elevation below 3500 (or more) is the locality of the thickhead. its environs are indicative of the possibility of altitude variation. On smaller islands like Gaua, the Thickhead was found above 1500 or better 2000 feet; similarly Nulumbura although they were lower than 1500 because of the greater height of the island. Where you find the Thickhead preferring altitude, the yellow-bil dove and possibly the bush kingfishers in greater number will also be encountered. Finding the Thickhead directly in from the beach indicates that the doves also range lower. This was the case on Vella Lavella. Dr. Arow shot a yellow-bil dove at a surprisingly low elevation. In fact, we took nothing unusual by climbing on Vella; similarly New Geor- gia main island. The idea is to penetrate at as many possible points. Gatumai and Vaugum for rare stuff will be far more yielding around the clouds. The latter is the most important of the group - from the standpoint of varieties of birds. New Georgia, itself will give numbers for series. I do not anticipate much intra-variation within the group. Including the small outlying islands, the nearer islands fronting the lagoons, islets within the lagoons, Wana Wana and Arundel, etc.,
