have some mail. We had a fine view both from the mission & Mateka, & from the mission we had a particularly fine view of Mt. St. Marys. We had an accident shortly before starting to depart into the Jacaranda valley the new horse, Angabunga, slipped and went to its bottom of a stream fell about 10 ft. below from Mackus May 2 1933 The Trail for the first half of the way (about 2 hrs) wound around the sides of the valley climbing slowly all the time reaching a little over 400 meters according to my barometer. All the way we had good views of the nearby foot hill and an occasional glimpse of the main range. The trail all the way of change too very steep slopes across which numerous land slides had gone. Luckily for Angabunga slipped off the trail where there we put log to stop him. For the second half the trail after crossing the divide went down along the valley at first gradually & then in well graded switchbacks. At Mateka we got a starter to take its load from one of our who had a swelling of the leg glands and also found a woman to lightly lift all the loads by carrying them away. The mountain women dress similar to the men that is with only a narrow band of cloth passing between the legs. May 3, 1933 We had a little difficulty getting past but we just succeeded. We descended on switch backs for the first hr. to the Keo river which was very cold and pretty well a put high waterfall coming in opposite. It took me a little while to get across as I had to remove my dress boot case when I caught up with the outfit Actamson just reaching Angabunga who had gone over the side. Two hrs. from the Keo we came to Range view where we caught up with the ladies who continued into us for the forty minutes to Magulu where its three of us
