I left Orange after breakfast via shortly before 9:00
and got to Urra about one. On the way down bird
songs were quite noticeable or else it so struck me was
so thenown. Black & white warblers were particular
noticeable. Brownscrafts (c) were common and agreetively
as I could not hit them, th one that I did hit
went down in the tall grass so that it was impossi
to find it. Carols were also quite noticeable especially
near scrub bordering to longpa. I climbed
over the hill instead of going through the scrub on the
unfinished part just after the river, and while crossing
a grass flat I flushed a quail unfortunately he flushed
behind me and by the time I turned around
he was sitting in the grass although I rushed
to try get it failed to flush him or again.
I read time most all afternoon except for a little
while around 4:00 when a few old women brought
some canna tayo & can. At sun set I went down
to the point of the ridge back from Urra where I smoked
a cigar while watching clouds as mist drifted
up the valley, the air was quite clear that there
haze and the drifting clouds gave a ever changing
pictor of the steeply ridged valley. The Vanepha
valley floor is quite wide 13 km or more wide & narrowing
down below. Into this project an immense number of
ridges; which on the Orange or western side are quite level,
with edges coming down slightly to the river. While the gorge
of Eastern has a number of greater proportion of these
ridges are longer and have apparently been sheared off
into flat tables so to speak. On both sides the banks
of the river is steeply covered with scrably trees & shrubs
mostly secondary; above this there is a wide area of
glass where there are patches of secondery forest in the gullies
and above this the heavy forest. I had a somewhat small
amount of fresh pake dry bread and corn which while eating I wondered
what would be said to a n.y. hotel proprietor if he dared
to serve so tough an ear. Anyway throughout it seemed
and I had fears for the morrow.
