RUBBLE, D.O. 1989 Journal 38 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. March 26 (cont) didnt go out to check traps this PM - I need some sleep! March 27 0600h - out checking traps on MC. It's clear, calm, low 50's. d closed all traps on the drift fences and left passageways open, and covered the pitfalls while d checked traps. d finished checking & picking up traps on RC by 1000h. On my way back to lab d had serious engine trouble - vacuum pump (thermactor) froze. Suzanne, Mel, & I tinkered with it for about 3 hrs and finally got it working after taking it apart and greasing it. Mel and d finally headed back to Berkeley around 1700h. April 4 Arrived back to Hastings around 1700h today (Note that time has switched to Daylight Saving Time, so all times from today on are PST, DST). It's clear, sunny, low 70's. Spring is still progressing (grass green, most of the trees are fully leafed, more & different flowers blooming), but it is very dry and the soil is very hard. Mark Stanbach said the woodpeckers have begun hatching babies - about 2 weeks ahead of schedule. Karen Klein arrived around 1730h - Karen will be working with and for me through June. Good to have her aboard, particularly to monitor activity along the drift fences. We set RC & MC drift fence traps from 1815 to 1915hrs. It doesn't get dark now until around 1940h. April 5 0700h - out checking traps on MC drift fences. It's clear, calm, low 50's. We finished checking traps by 0900h and returned to the lab to show Karen around. Later, Karen went into town for groceries, etc, and d stayed to work on paperwork, etc. Today was sunny and warm (mid 80's) with a slight breeze from the west. From 1715 to 1750hrs we reset RC drift fence traps and some traps on GEIO RC around stations 9, 7 and 4, 13 in order to trap females and possible offspring.
