RIBBLE, DA 1988 Journal 122 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Dec 8 (cont) This afternoon was calm but cool (low 60's). I reset grid WZ from 15-1600h. The max/min thermometer appears to be recording correctly in the shade now. Reset drift fence traps from 110-1700h. Added 2 National traps in wooden shelters at station W-1e or RC (both sides). Tonight is a new moon. Dec 9 Observed checking traps on MC. It's clear, calm, low 40's. Started checking RC traps by 0730hrs - 14/16 % trap success on west drift fence, and 11/19 on east fence - should add traps to east fence. Started checking traps on WZ by 0830h - A lot of animals this am! Only 12 traps closed with no animal. Finished checking traps by 1030h and proceeded to pick up all traps, the hygrograph, (attached) and find a new P.C. that I previously identified as P. truei. Returned to the lab around 1230h to spin blood down. Summary of results on WZ - P. californicus - 5 captures (1 new) P. truei - 23 captures (1 new) N. fusipes - 16 captures P. boylii - 1 Peregrinus - 7 captures (1 new) TOTAL - 52 captures (3 new) At 1415h this afternoon I was driving down the lane when I spotted a Northern Pygmy Owl killing a Brown Towhee on the edge of the lane, ~ 30m inside the gate. I watched it for 5 minutes until it flew off with the towhee, barely able to get off the ground! (The towhee must have been equal in weight). Set all traps on RC from 1430 to 1615h. Added 4 traps to the east drift fence, total = 26. Reset MC traps, drift fence traps by 1700h.
