RUBBIS, DO. 1988 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Oct 31 0245h - out checking traps on MC. It's clear, 60°. Again, dismal results this am. To make matters worse there were two mortalities this am - a P. californicus (Cat #927, ear-tag #1184) and a Procyonatus. In each case the animal appears to have been caught by the trap door, and the exposed part of its body was eaten. In the P. californicus, only the skull was left so I at least know which animal it was. There were some traps rolled and opened up in the 2 upper corners of the grid - around 10,5; 11,18-9,18. Overall not that many stations affected (<10), but should put the large carnivore traps in the corners. Checked RC drift fence traps (need to add traps to east fence, success = 6/24) from 0730 to 085h and returned to the lab to prepare #1184 (skull only). Summary of results on MC: P. californicus - 2 captures (1 mortality) P. borfii - 4 " Procyonatus - 3 " (mortality) TOTAL - 9 captures (2 mortalities) Spent the rest of the morning working on boxes to enclose the mercury thermometers. Spent the afternoon working on data. Today was windy, partly cloudy, and warm (80°F). Reset RC drift fences from 10-1030ish, and all MC traps from 1130-1725h. I moved the existing carnivore trap to station 10,5; and put another one at station 11,18. Finished just before it got dark. Nov 1 0630h - out checking traps on MC. It's cool (upper 40s) and foggy (wet fog moved in 0400h). Caught a thrayer in the large carnivore trap at station 10,5. Better results this am with only ~2 or so traps turned over. Loaded the thrayer in the truck and then checked RC drift fences from 0745-0830h. Drove down Carmel Valley and released the thrayer on the Carmel Rd (same location as previous thrayer)
