Ribble, D.O. 1988 Journal 109 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif Oct 29 (cont.) Finished by 1600hrs and moved on to RC to set all drift fence traps. Students from the mammal class set 10 mole spec traps and ons around the east drift fence (at my suggestion). I added 2 more at E-7. Spent the remaining hour of daylight with the mammal class tending bat nets on Robertson Creek - no captures by sunset. 2310h - out checking traps on GRID MC. It's cool (lower 50's) and clean. The moon (~5th full, waning) is just rising. Finished by 2400h and returned to the cabin. Tonight time goes back to Pacific Standard Time Oct 30. 0105h - out checking traps on RC drift fences. Clean, calm, lower 50's. Returned to the lab - no moles were captured in any of the seven traps. Returned to the lab to pick up Ellie & Wendy Roberts, and we began checking MC traps around 0750h. Desmal results - finished by 0830h there were so few animals. Summary of Results on MC: P. californicus P. boylii P. truei Perognathus N. fascipes TOTAL 29 (Au) 3 7 3 4(new) 1 18 (used) 30(Au) 1 2 1 0 0 4 # used 4 8 3 4 1 20 Frances brought back a multiparous female P. californicus from Robertson Creek which I ear-tagged into put into one of the enclosures (#144! - see appxct). Reset all MC traps from 1510 to 1600h, and RC grid fence traps from 16-1630h. The mammal class left the mole spec traps, so I left them set. It's too dark to work now by 1730h. Since there are so few animals on MC, I'll only check traps in the am.
