Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif: Oct 11 Arrived at Hastings today around 1330h. Skies are clear, upper 70's. All only be here for 6 days - plan on trapping grids WZ & RC. All the vegetation is still very dry. Deciduous trees still have leaves, except most of the poison oak has lost its leaves. Sun 15-1630h I set out traps and baited traps on grid WR. Most of the poison oak in West Ravine has lost its leaves (at last!). Set traps on Robertson Creek (grid RC) drift fences, using only the permanent traps (eg. no additional traps added). Robertson Creek is also as low as I've ever seen it, but it is still flowering. The poison oak leaves are just turning red along the creek. Set MC drift fence traps around 1730h. Madame Canyon is extremely dry - all the Buckeye leaves are dried out. Saw my first Tarantula of the fall in front of the cabin this afternoon. Also, found a large! (Hendrikson) E. concolor scat on the trail ~ 20m west of the MC East drift fence. Appeared to be full of deer hair. It gets dark now around 1830h. The fog rolled in at sunset, but receded by 2100hrs. No sign of the moon early this evening. Oct 12 Closed out checking traps on MC. It's clear, 46'. It's still dark enough to use my headlamp. Checked RC drift fence traps next and proceeded to grid WR around 0830h. Many (~30) traps were closed with no animal - most likely Nestoma. Caught several Nestoma, but all in Sherman traps, none in National traps. Finished catching traps by 1100hrs and collected tissues from 3 new animals from WZ and one from MC at the truck. Relaxed them in good shape and returned to the lab - at noon to spin blood and put sample in nitrogen.
