Rubble, DA 1988 Journal 100! Sept 20 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. (cont.) 1) found scat of racoon (d. thick) at 9,9 2) racoon tracks near drift fence and 3) the animal doing this must have manual dexterity because several traps were flipped vertically, several rolled traps were under bushes, and one of the missing traps was set inside a trap box laid on its side. Bought all new to set a large trap and check traps in the evening. There were so few animals I finished by 0815h (I did catch 5 P. californicus which tend to come out early in the night). Revisited all RC drift fence animals, so I didn't finish until 1000h. Returned to lab to prepare tail tips - Summary of results on MC: P. californicus - Sept P. boylii - 10" P. trui - 2" Peromyscus - 2" Total - 19 captures I returned to grid MC around 1030hrs and searched everywhere for the missing traps with no luck. Both missing traps are next to large (4m dbh) live oaks and perhaps a Possum could carry them up the tree. Spent most of the afternoon preparing Spermophilus skeletons (collected by Sugars during my absence). Today was clear, mid 90's. Reset MC traps from 81645 to 1900hrs. I set the large national trap near station B,F and 4 woodrat-sized Nationals along row 10. Reset RC drift fence traps around 1800hrs. 2130hrs - out checking traps on MC. It's clear, low 60's. Moon is ~ 1/2 full and overhead. All my predictions were wrong! Caught a Urseyon in the large national trap at B,F - I checked all traps on rows 9,10,11, and most of 8. Very few animals, but few traps turned over! Found the missing traps from 8,12 below station C
