Today I began collecting tail tissue for DNA fingerprinting from all new animals (plus I need to collect tails from all currently tagged animals). With #1414, I clipped ~3cm tail and immediately began collecting blood from the tip with hematocrit tubes. By gently squeezing & massaging the tail, it was able to collect about 1/2 tubes of blood (~125uL). This amount should be adequate for electrophoresis. I also collected saliva. I plan on getting additional loci from a bit of the tail sheath instead of clipping ears as last year. The cartilage was removed from the tail sheath before freezing the sheath w/ O2. Around noon I released #1414 at its capture location. Spent the rest of the afternoon moving back into the cabin and washing clothes. Today was clear, upper 80's. I set MC drift fence traps around 1615hrs and all RC traps from 1645 to 1750hrs. Saw a Lyre rufus in the oaks north of the last RC drift fence. Sept 15. 0640h- out checking traps on MC. It's foggy, 46°. Started checking traps on RC by 0720h. Caught 3 juvenile Didelphis (husam IZ on east drift fence, one on grid) on RC which I returned to the lab to save. Also had 1 Neotoma mortality and 1 very torpid Neotoma. Returned to lab around 1800hrs to stuff the Neotoma. Summary of results on RC: P. Californicus : 13 captures P. boydii : 25 " (1 new) Microtus : 4 " N. fuscipes : 7 " (1 mortality) Perognathus : 2 " (1 new) TOTAL : 51 captures (1 new)
