LUBBLE, D.D 1988 JOURNAL 95 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Sept 13 I ended staying in Berkeley longer than anticipated, due in part to a trip to Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands. Fabulous boat! I arrived back down at Hastings around 1500h. Shores are close, mid 80's. Unfortunately, the cabin will be occupied tonight by Bill Carmen & family, so all have to bunk in the Red house this evening (Carmen was supposed to leave today - shithead!). At 1700h I began setting 12L drift fences and all grid traps. The vegetation along Robertson Creek looks amazingly green considering the drought conditions, although the level of the creek is as low as I've ever seen it. Barely a trickle in spots. Finished setting all traps by 1915h and headed home. Didn't get to MC drift fence traps. I won't be checking traps at night this week unless animals are breeding (doubtful). Weather conditions should be no problem. It is dark by 2000h and there is no moon (it rises during the day). Sept 14 0645h - out checking traps on grid 12L. It's clear and cool (low 50's?). Sun rises at 0655h, so it is barely light enough to see. A lot of animals this am! Should add traps to drift fences to keep success < 45%. Very few grid traps caught with no animal (~5-10), but should add a few Nebraska traps. Finished by 1030h and returned to lab with a new P. californicus. Summary of results: P. californicus - 15 (1 new) P. boylii - 23 (2 new) M. citotes - 1 N. pacifica - 7 (2 new) Perognathus - 4 (3 new) TOTAL - 50 (8 new)
