STEINBERG, OC 1988 JOURNAL Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co., California June 1 1400 h - Traps were set along dispersal transects east and west of Robertson Creek drift fences (See D.O. Risble's notes for location). Drift fence traps were also set. In addition, six traps were set below the bridge in front of the bunch house in order to try and catch a pair of P. californicus for captive breeding studies. Finished by 1900 h. June 2 0615 h - scattered clouds, low 40s at Robertson Creek checking traps. It took me until 1030h to finish and it was getting pretty warm by then so tomorrow I will start earlier and move quicker. I caught a # 1287 under the bridge and dusted her green. I also caught # 1289. I will go out tonight to see if I catch him again with powder. Also worthy of comment is the fact that there is a Red Shouldered Hawks nest with a young bird in it above W-13 on the Robertson Creek dispersal transect. This afternoon I will set up or new cage in case I catch both P. californicus under the bridge. 2330h - Checked traps under bridge - 1 Notina, 2 P. boglii, & P. californicus June 3 0545 h - low 40s, scattered clouds at Robertson Creek. Checked dispersal transects, drift fences + bridge traps. # 1287 P. californicus caught under bridge. Finished by 0950h. This afternoon I cleaned out the captive animal's cage and set up data sheets for woodrat house census on Madrone Canyon. My sister Julie arrived at 1620h and I showed her around a little before I went to set traps. As I headed out at 1700h Dave Laabs arrived for a quick visit in his new Santa Cruz. He accompanied me as I set dispersal and drift fence traps on Robertson Creek. It is now 2315 h. Dave, Julie and I are spending the night on Dave Riesler's porch because there's not enough space in my mom + Dave was too tired after dinner to drive to Santa Cruz. No P. californicus under the bridge tonight, but we did discover a bat in the living room of the cabin! June 4 0545 h - upper 40s; a few low clouds. I'm going to first check the traps on the drift fences at Medrone Canyon and then head over to Robertson Creek to check drift fence, and the dispersal transects + I'll stop in the way to check the traps under the bridge. Then Julie, Dave and I are going to hopefully go for a hike. 1700h - Julie and Dave both took off about an hour ago. I am heading out to set the traps shy Robertson ("Poison Oak") Creek. 2300h - Still no P. californicus under bridge, but half of the traps there were closed out empty; so perhaps this is the explanation. June 5 0550 h - upper 30s; scattered clouds. It feels very cold out here. I'm checking traps at RC, then will head to me and the bridge. I finished at 0945 h. Unfortunately, an immature P. boglii was found dead in a trap in Madrone Canyon. I will attempt to stuff it this afternoon, and hopefully get a start on the woodrat house census. This afternoon I was working on the woodrat house census in Madrone Canyon when it started to rain. I phoned Dave R. in El Centro and he told me to close the traps along the dispersal transect and to cover the pitfall cans and place boards over drift fence traps. I did this, and gathered some blocks from RC grid for the bridge traps. It was not raining at 2300h when I checked the bridge traps. No P. californicus again.
