Zibals, D.O. 1988 Journal 84 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. July 14 0500h - out checking traps on RC. It's clear, calm, no moon, mid 50s. Started checking traps on MC by 0620h, finishing by 0810h. I returned to the lab to bleed a new P.californicus from MC (#139) and Ellie went to weigh babies. Summary of results on MC: P.californicus : 10 captures (live) P.boylei : 30 " (1 dead) P.tuerci : 3 live W.fuscipes : 1 " Perognathus : 1 " Total 45 captures(2dead) Today was warm (low 90s), clear, and breezy. From 1330 to 1700h we worked on rodent measures on MC (dispersion, size of burrowes and bay trees). From 1700 to 1600h we took humidity readings on all 3 grids. Reset all MC traps from 1600-1645 and RC traps from 1645-1715h. July 15 0500h - out checking traps on RC. It's clear, calm, no moon, low 50s. Finished around 0800h. At station (1,14 a Nefrona was caught by the tail going out and something ate its 7/3 anterior of the body (hind limbs, pelvic girdle, and tail remaining). It was a mature female with 3 uterine scars (2L,1R). Picked up traps on MC as we checked them, finished by 0900h. I went to check the max-min thermometers on WB while Ellie weighed babies. Summary of results on MC: P.californicus : 8 captures P.boylei : 23 captures (2 dead) P.tuerci : 3 " Perognathus : 2 " 36 " (2 dead) (Several (~12) traps were closed with no animal. A snake scat was found on a trap at 10,5 and snake odor was prevalent across the grid, so presumably a snake closed many of the traps).
