RIBBLE, D.O. 1988 JOURNAL 3 Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Jan 10 0710hrs - out checking traps on MC drift fences. It's clear, calm, mid 40's. Finished checking traps by 0930hrs. Female # 1074 was found dead in a trap this am, along with a Sorex's P.boefii (see P.californicus Sp.Scot). Returned to lab to stuff these. Summary of results this am on RC: P.californicus: 10 captures (1 mortality) P.boeffii : 15 captures (1 " ) Micratus : 2 " Penquathus : 4 " N. europes : 5 " Total Captures: 36 captures. Clouds moved in this am resulting in cloudy skies today. In the afternoon I added 8 traps to the drift fence west of RC because I've been having > 50% trap success. Thus, there are 2 traps every 5m from W-1 to W-11. I reset RC grid from 1530 to 1630hrs, taking care to check all traps for sufficient bait. I also added a crumpled up paper towel to those traps which are especially prone to get damp. Reset MC drift fence from 1645 to 1515 hrs. The fog began to roll in this afternoon. 2245hrs - out checking traps on RC with Scott. It's clear and warmish (50's). Will only check the west part of the grid. We finished checking traps by 2345hrs and headed home. Jan 11 0700hrs - out checking traps on MC drift fence. It's overcast and raining off and on. At 0800hrs this am it was raining hard. It never rained while we were checking traps this am, but it remained mostly overcast. Finished checking all traps by 0910hrs and returned to lab to bleed animals.
