RIBBON, D.O. 1988 Journeys 05 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. May 24 II Transect upstream from MC along Main Canyon (set by Me, Bernie, Alex) (cont) stations traps Stations 2-34 within Hastings 36 at Hastings boundary 38-5B, skipping St #40 (no habitat for Peromyscus, open grassland) (Buckeye Hill Arroyo). II Transect up (east) tributary arroyo leading to MC. Starts at about Station E-10 on the MC east fence (set by Me, Bernie, Alex) Stations 2-40 all off Hastings 20 40 TOTAL for all transects 118 336 traps We took it easy around mid-day and then reset all transects from 11:00 to 1:00 PMs, moving all stations 10m. Some stations were left as is or traps split between adjacent 10m stations if the habitat was good or a P.californicus was caught. We went out on MC around 2:30 to play with the night vision goggles and Marco did telemetry- Returned around 2:50 PM. May 25 0630 - out checking traps. It's overcast, low 50's. Finished checking and picking up all traps by 11:00. Returned to lab to bleed 1 new P.californicus from RC and an old one trapped up Madrona Canyon that has never been tagged. 3 more tagged P.californicus were caught this am (see data sheets for details), an additional tagged P.californicus escaped before positive ID on Robertson Creek. We should trap this area again to see if it is a disperser or tagged individual. All in all - great results and a lot of fun. Everyone peddled out of here around noon. Elli Steinberg, my new field assistant, arrived today. He is scheduled to stay for 2 months. We reset EC drift fence traps from around 17:30 PMs and Marco set 6 traps 200m downstream to try and catch the P.californicus that escaped this am (see above).
