Robble, D.O 1980 Journal 60 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif May 18 (cont.) I released all the new animals at their capture sites before noon. Today was sunny and clear, upper 70's. Spent most of the afternoon working on the enclosure - almost finished. Reset RC drift fence traps from 1645 to 1715 hrs. As I was walking from the west fence to the east fence across the grid, from 20m away I flushed a Cooper's Hawk at station 9, 17. When I walked past the station, I found a decoy taken or Sylvilagus bachmani'. Observed the bunny was still warm and soft, so the hawk must have just killed it. I kept the bunny for use as bait for Lynx on Jerome. Reset MC traps from 1730 to 1840h. Set the long National trap baited with the S. bachmani near station 8, 10 2230h - out checking traps on MC. It's clear, calm, mid 50's. The moon (1/4th full) is just setting. The National trap was sprung, but nothing in it. The rabbit (brix) had been chewed. Reset it. Several (~15) stations had traps turned. Finished checking traps by 2335h May 19 0615h - out checking traps on MC. It's clear, calm, low 50's. Caught the lynx in the trap this am! Canned it in the trap back to the fence to release away from her.. Finished checking traps on RC by 0915h. Drive over to Mark & Shorty's to clean out the cage of the captive animals and take a vaginal smear from # 1135. I had Mark help me lift up the trap to see the lynx and shit, it appears as if it is a lactating F. The anterior feet don't look lactating, but the posterior 2 are definitely swollen and sagging (eg. ~). What to do... Hopefully this experience will keep her away for a few days, so I released her at the cabin around 1030h and she took off
