BUBBL, D.O. 1988 Journal 505 Nashings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. May 5 (cont) It continued to rain off and on all day, even hailing at times. After some rest Karen worked on the computer and I worked on habitat schemes. From 1700 to 1800h we reset all traps on RC, adding paper towels to the drift fence traps. I took Karen back to the lab so she could set MC drift fence traps. I returned to RC with Mark Stanback to retrieve # #114 Z's (see spp acct) cellar. I also released the 2 new animals bled this am. #1265 was released out on RC west fence and he followed the fence north and went in another trap. I then released him on the in side and he scurried away. 2215-out on RC. It's cold & raining! Shifty! Off quit raining shortly after we started. Many traps with animals were very wet inside and the rats rolled into a mess - I left those closed. Finished @ 1325h. May 6 0905h - out checking traps on MC. It's cloudy and cool (low 48s), looks like it could rain any moment. It actually stayed dry and the sun was shining when we finished checking traps at 0930h. I returned to the lab to bleed 2 new P. californicus and stuff 3 Soey mortalties, and Karen went to clean out the captive animal cage and take original smears from My female. Summary of results on Grid RC: P. californicus 5pm (13 capt) 6am (13 capt) # ind. Over 100 animals with drift fence animals. It took me until 1400h to finish bleeding stuffing. Karen released #1266 before noon - drained #1266 @ 1530h (see spp acct). We reset RC traps from 1530h to 1700h (cleaning out many traps), and MC drift fence traps from 1700 to 1730h (a little earlier than usual due to movie night in Carmel). The weather remained the same today - rain off and on, high in the low 50s.
