Rabbit, DO 1989 Journal 15 Hashing Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Feb 2 (cont) to survey reproductive activity in P. californicus only. Reset MC drift fence traps by 1745h. 2140h - did checking 12 grid traps. Overcast, calm, low 40s. Will only be recording captures of P. californicus - I caught this Pen. Finished by 2220h - Feb 3 0700h - out checking traps on MC drift fence. Overcast, low 40s. It was raining earlier at 0600, but it has now stopped. Started (see opposite) checking traps on RC by 0730h. Good results on the grid & transects. Since I caught all ♀ P.C., I began opening up the Slemans half-way through. Will open the rest this PM. On the east drift fence I caught ♀ #0340 (1217) at E-Blout weighing only 35.5g (previously 43g). I checked the trap again and found 2 dead babies!! She had given birth and then chewed on their heads - one had its nose totally missing. I released the ♀ female and took the babies back to the lab to collect their tissues (sawd liver, heart, and carcass in vac tubes labelled 1217-baby). Both babies were male. It rained off and on all day and stayed cold. I reset RC drift fence traps and the 10 transect stations from 1530-1640h. Made sure all traps had adequate bird and paper towels for nesting. Reset MC drift fence traps by 1730h. Rained through the night -- Feb 4 0630h - out checking traps on MC. Snow is covering the ground (2 inches) and it is snowing lightly! Low 30s. I opened up all traps, leaving passageways open, and covered all pit fall cans as I checked traps. Started checking traps on RC by 0730 and finished by 0400h. It stayed cloudy and cold, even snowing at times the rest of the day. Most of the snow was gone around the low elevations by the time I left about 1500h.
