Ellen and I thought about poking the snake with the stick but then decided against it. Next we checked the 38 extra traps set but unfortunately, still no P. californicus. We walked to the west fence and checked these traps. A P. boylii was caught and killed in the doorway of one of the traps. I took it to the lab later and put it in formalin. We finished checking by about 0845h. Arrived back at the cabin at about 0900h. Ellen left around 0920h for her house in Salinas. I left then to walk down to the barn. I took the 3 smears and cleaned the cages of these 3 females. I also cleaned cleaned cage 2. I washed out both sides of this wooden box. I also weighed all the mice except for the ♀ incaged who had 2 newborns firmly attached to her. I was afraid to pull too hard to get the babies off (they were nursing). I finished the cages' cleanings and checking closely all the other cages around 1130h. At around 1200h I talked to Dr Harry Greene at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology in Berkeley.
