Journal Hastings Reservation June 14 coiled up about half a foot from the the fence. The snake was very still and was not rattling at us. Standing a few feet away we watched it and it appeared to be watching us. Ellen decided to toss a little stick near it to see if it would move or rattle but it didn't. The snake was coiled so its rattle was not visible. It was about a foot from the a trap that el had just set. only about 3 minutes earlier so the snake had most likely been there. We watched the snake a few minutes more and finally went to set the extra traps between the fence and the grid. Tonight el set 38 traps here. Then we went to the west RC fence. At about 1800h we drove to the cabin and walked out to set the MC drift fences. June 15 at 0615h when Ellen and I left the cabin the temp was 57°F and the sky was clear. We first checked the 2 MC drift fences. At about 0700h we started checking the East RC Grid fence. When close to the rattlesnake spot we looked for it again and it was in exactly the same place.
