Von Behren, Julie 1984 Journal Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. June 7 At 1600h I cleaned cage 1 in the barn with the help of Megan Jahr. I weighed the 3 females. At 1700h Megan and I left the barn to go set RC drift fence traps. Then we drove back to the main office, signed Megan in and then went to set MC drift fence traps. We finished this task at 1830h. At 2030 we checked the bat net by Mark Stromb's house but no bats. The fog had begun to roll in around 1930h. At about 20:50h we walked up the road by WC Grid area listening for Saw-whet Owls. Alan later played his recording of these bird twice. I heard the owls further up the canyon and off to the side of the road. We walked down into the canyon using the path that leads to the end of the Grid stations. He climbed across the creek and up the bank until we were right by the tree the owl must have been in. However we could not actually see the bird. Two other Saw-whets could be heard further up the canyon. At 21:40h, back at the car parked at the start of the path to Grid WC we heard a Great Horned Owl call. We briefly stopped back at Mark's net but still no bats. June 8 at 600h the temp was 48F and the fog was thick. Megan and I went to check MC drift fences at 6:20h. At about 7:15h we drove to RC drift fences.
