LIBREDO 1984 Journal 8 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Jan 23 Arrived back down at Hastings by 1430 this afternoon - Cloudy, raining, upper 40's - wonderful... After lugging all my stuff up to the cabin, I set all LP, 15 MC and MC drift fence traps from 1530-1730h. The trails in Madison Canyon are all a muddy mess, so it must have rained quite a bit lately. Finished just as it was getting dark, so I didn't get over to set DC drift fence traps. 2415h - out checking traps on MC. It's lightly overcast, big W burst from moon, upper 40's. Good used to this put - returned with 2 new P. californicus. Finished by 2250h. Jan 24 0700h - out checking traps on MC. It's overcast, upper 40's. Finished by 0830h and returned to lab to collect tissues from new Ps. Caught 23 (PM) 24 (AM) #new last night. Summary of results on MC: P. californicus 7 (2new) 5 9 P. boylii 11 (2new) 8 (1new) 15 P. truei 4 4 6 Peromyscus 2 2 2 24(2new) 19 32 More animals caught in PM than AM. Returned the new animals to their capture sites in good shape by 1000h - Also checked on lab animals and both females gave birth during my absence! Spent rest of day on computer. Skies cleared before noon and today was sunny, temp in low 50's. Reset MC traps from 15-1600h and set DC drift fence traps from 1600-1645h. 215h - out checking traps on MC. It's clear, calm, mid-40's, the moon is just rising. Not many animals this PM - thought with the moon rising, most animals would be active early. Finished by 2200h. Moon is ~ 3/4 full and waning.
