Ribble, D.D 1987 Journal 607 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. May 31 Vegetation is still quite green on WR. We reset PC and (Cant) MC drift fence traps by 1430h. 220h - out checking traps on WR. Clear, mid 50's no moon. Reasonable results this PM. Heard 2 Saw-whet owls calling (raspy call) and saw one above station 5,3. Finished by 2330h. June 1 0615h - out checking traps on MC. Clear, low 50's. Only 2 mice on drift fences. Started checking traps on PC drift fence by 0905h and finished by 0720. Started checking traps on WR by 0730h. Great results - a lot of Vesperona. Returned to truck by 0930 and collected tissues from new Pel (16/3). Released him in good shape by 1010h. Summary of results on WR - P. californicus P. truei N. furcyopes Perognathus Micotus TOTAL 8 5(1new) 13(2new) 1 0 27 14 12 (1new) 13(3new) 9(2new) 2 1view 36 # und 14 21 2 1 52 Spent the rest of the am taking vaginal smears and spinning down blood. Today was sunny and warm (upper 80's). Spent most of the afternoon cleaning mouse cages and collecting tissues from meanling capture mice (7 total!). Didn't start resetting grid or traps until 1800h. Finished by 1840h, reset PC drift fence traps, and Julie reset MC drift fence traps by 1930h. 1215h - out checking traps on WR. Clear, calm, low 60's. Very few animals tonight, but we did have fun with the Saw-whet owls! Finished by 2315h.
