RIBBE, D.D 1989 burns 606 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. May 24 0630h - out checking traps on MC drift fence traps. Clean, mid 40's. Not of new animals on the last fence. Started checking traps on RC drift fence traps by 0715h and didn't finish until 0830h. Returned to lab to examine lab vaginal smears and collect blood from new RC (# 10/2). Spent the rest of the am cleaning traps - yusso-shoppie. Released 10/2 at his capture point in good shape shortly after noon. Today was warm (low 80's) and breezy. In the afternoon I had to search for 2 missing traps on the transect upstream from RC. Found them at the last station! Reset RC traps from 10-1830h and MC drift fence traps and the same grid traps by 1900h May 25 0615h - out checking traps on MC. Overcast, upper 40's (balmy). Opened up all drift fence traps as I checked traps. Finished MC by 0645h and proceeded to check RC drift fence traps. Finished by 0800h, changed hygrothermograph paper on RC & WR, and picked up 7 (5 from RC, 2 from WR) Neotoma trap boxes (P.Kelly needs them next week). Returned to lab to prepare Sorex mortality and examine vaginal smears. Spent the rest of the day working on computer and cleaning up cabin. Left for Berkeley around 1900h. May 31 Arrived back down at Hastings today around 1300h. Hot (mid 80's) and breezy. All hills are "golden brown" and some flowers remain. Summer has definitely arrived! Julie Von Behren, my new field assistant for the next 2 months, arrived yesterday and was waiting for my arrival. Good to have some assistance, finally!
