Ebbelle D.O. 1989 Journal 2 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif Jan 5 (08h) The rain continued (sometimes hard) through the afternoon. I picked up a bucheve that rodents have chewed and I measured the molar widths with a caliper (1.4, 1.65, 1.5, 1.4, and 1.7 mm). Should compare these to skulls to see if I can nail down the species. I reset all MC traps from 15-17feeths; had to clean out many of the traps. Rain (hail) continued off and on after sunset. 2120 Checked - out checking traps on MC. Overcast, low 40s, raining lightly. Left a few traps closed because they were wet. Finished by 2245hrs. Skies have actually cleared! Perhaps this storm is over... Jan 6. 0650h - out checking traps on MC. No rain overnight. Partly cloudy, upper 30s. Snow on the Arnold and the east ridge. Not bad results this am considering weather. Finished by 0845h and returned to lab to collect tissues from new annual. Summary of results - P. californicus P. boylii P. truei Perognathus N. hirsipes D. maniculatus TOTAL 5 (1 new) 7 (1 new) 10 4 5 5 1 1 1 2 (1 new) 1 2 1 (1 new) 18(1 new) 20 (3 new) 27 Spent the rest of the day working on data, etc. Today was partly cloudy with sunshine to dry out things - it remained cool (mid 50s). Reset GRID MC traps from 15-1630h - At sunset I checked on conditions on GRID EC. A few patches of snow still present and all the blackberry and grasses (especially along the stream) have been smashed down by the snow - impressive difference. 2115h - out checking traps on MC. It's clear and cold (35°). Only 10 animals captured tonight!?. Finished by 2155hrs. Clouds rolled in since I've been out and it's raining lightly.
