RIBBLE, D.O. 1987 Journal 42 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif Oct. 13. Obviously, most animals are active early in the evening prior to moon-rise. Returned to lab to stuff animals. Before noon, we returned to the grid and finished expanding the drift fence west of RC-1. It now goes up to station W-12. We also took radio-readings on animals (see spp. scat). We set 40 traps on the MC-1 drift lines around 1730 hrs. We then went to RC-1 and while Marco struck checked on radio signals, I set only the following stations: 7,16; 16,16; 5,16; 5,17; 5,15; and 5,14. We are trying to catch #19440?, while radio-tracking the 3 animals with traps closed. 2050hrs - out on RC-1 to check new traps set's Radio-track. It's clear, calm, and cool (low 60's). Finished @ 2355 hrs. See spp. scat (Recalibrated) for details of night fakes Oct. 14 0800hrs - out to check MC-1 drift lines. It's clear, calm, low 70's. No captures on drift line. Spent the morning working in the cabin. 1330hrs - Marco and I staked out some additional points west of grid RC-1 for use as radio-telemetry reference points. Staked out 3,6; 3,4; 2,4; 2,5 (1m west of tree point); and 1,5 (3m west of tree point). We were also able to map the true location of the west drift fence. 1430hrs - we tried out our paint mixture on the drift fence west of RC-1. It took the 2 of us 1hr. to paint (supply) the entire fence. Our mixture turned out pink (hideous), or rather desert rose. I'm not sure about this color, and may paint over it. It will definitely be better than straight aluminum. Reset traps on MC-1 drift fences around 1700hrs. Today was clear calm, low 80's. Very nice!
