RIBBLE, DO: 1987 Journal Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co. Calif. Jan 31 Arrived at Hastings around 1400h. Will be here until Feb. 2 to collect saliva, ear tissue, and monitor P. californicus on Grids RC-1 and MC-1. Mostly clear, calm, hi in the 70's - very nice. Ground is damp and muddy in places from rain last week. Hills are beginning to turn green, trees are beginning to bud. Set traps on [illegible] MC-1 first - put 38 non-folding Shermans on top 2 rows and plan on leaving them in place. Took until 1700h to finish MC-1 because many of the traps were moldy from Dec trip - must remember to clean & dry wet traps. Next I set traps on RC-1, barely finished before dark ~ 1815hrs. Set 10 traps (Sherman) along Big Creek bed at easternmost road crossing for P. californicus. Some high clouds settled in at sunset. Moon in western sky < 1/4 - (Feb 1) Feb. 1 0730h - started on MC-2. 30min late because I had to change flat tire on truck. Skies clear, slight breeze, mid 30's. Resighting & first 2 P. californicus for ear tissue, but quit doing it because it took a long time for animal to recover and snipping seemed to cause little agony. Note two lactating females and escape route. Didn't finish MC-1 until 1030hrs. Caught and kept [illegible] P. californicus on 10-trap line at Big Creek & road. (also released 1 L. beryllii & 1 N. hispidus). Started on RC-1 at 1050, finished 1300h. Began cutting ear tissue from straight cut [illegible], rather than o [illegible]. Returned to lab and relabelled all vials and covered with magic scotch tape before dropping in Nitrogen. Experimented with spinning down saliva, but no deposit was noted in bottom of tubes, so will leave samples as is (used 0.25ml of distilled H2O to flush mouth). Afternoon mostly clear (some high clouds), warm 70's/3, and calm. Began resetting traps on MC-1 @ 1500hrs.
