RUBBLE, D.O. 1987 Journal 37 Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Oct. 4 (SUN) Set all traps on RC-1 and drift lines from 1645 to 1800hrs. Finished drift lines on MC-1 by 1830hrs. 2230hrs - out checking traps on drift fence west of RC-1. Moon is >3/4 full and very bright. It's warm (80°). Didn't catch # 835 but followed green powder trail to steep bank, ~2m down, above creek. No sign of nest hole Oct 5 0645hrs - out checking drift lines on MC-1. It's calm, clear, upper 70°. Finished checking all traps by 0900 which was just in time as the sun began to hit some traps. Note several things on Lord RC-1. #1079♀ lactating was dusted RED. She escaped to a hole in a stump between stations 7,15 & 6,14. #835 was caught and dusted, and she was not lactating. One of her young marked (1948) in August was captured with faint amount of green on ears - old transfer. #1020♂ had fresh green powder on ears, mouth, and eyes, and old powder on feet and penis. Returned to lab to process animals. Summary of MC-1 drift fence. P.boylii: 1 capture Perognathus: 1 ♀ TOTAL 2 CAPTURES Summary of RC-1: P. californicus : 5 captures P. boylii : 5 " (1 new) Perognathus : 7 captures (1 new) D. elegans : 1 " (1 new) S. townsendii : 2 " (immortality) N. fuscipes : 2 " (2 new) TOTAL: 22 Captures Returned #1020♂'s 1949 to their capture sites at 1245hrs in good condition. Reset traps on drift fence on MC-1 around 1600hrs and then went swimming at Noyes. Reset traps on RC-1 from 1815 to 1900 hrs. Just getting dark when I finished. Set a MacDise for the Scapanus on the west drift fence. Today was another scorch - 106°!
