RIBBLE, D.D 1987 Journal 3le Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Oct. 3 (cont). 11030hrs - released #1443 on the drift fence east of RC-1 and reset all traps. Reset all traps on MC-1 from 1715 to 1815 hrs. Today was a scorcher! Shorty heard from a ranch it was 110°! 22 2230hrs - out to check the west drift fence on RC-1 for #835. The moon is 3/4 full (increasing) and overhead. It is still quite warm (low 90s). Caught #835 at W-9 and dusted her with green powder. I walked 5 min and then followed her trail to the NE for ~15 m to a fallen oak tree that is 1.5 m off the ground. Could not find her trail after that. Next time I should dust & release her at this spot. Finished by 2300hrs & returned home. Oct 4 0710 - out checking traps on MC-1. Looks like another hot one today. Closed all traps on Kingbird. Finished checking traps on RC-1 drift fences at 0910. There is a Squawry at station E-7 which covers up the traps with dirt each evening. I'll have to take care of this. Note that I recaptured #835 and released her when I lost her trail last night. Before returning to process animals, etc., I put folding Shermans on grid RC-1 to be set this afternoon. Summary of results on MC-1: P. californicus : 1 capture P. boylii : 5 captures (2 new) P. huei : 2 captures (1 new) Perognathus : 7 captures Neotoma : 2 17 total CAPTURES Lowest total of 4 days, perhaps due to heat Summary on RC-1 drift lines: P. californicus : 3 captures Perognathus : 2 " S. townsendi : 1 " (mortality) Total 6 CAPTURES Returned to lab to process tissues and dead animals. Today was another hot day in the 90s.
