RIBBLE, D.O. 1987 Journal 29 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Aug. 8 (cont) Oleibu - checking traps on RC-1. It's foggy, calm, and cool (low 70's) Didn't catch #835 in a trap this morning, but I did get her radio signal in the same madrone. Finished checking traps at 0740 hrs. It is clear with scattered fog lower in the valley. Summary of capture results (am): P. californicus: 6 captures P. boylii : 11 captures N. fusipes : 4 " Perognathus : 5 " Total : 26 captures. I returned to hugud to try & find #835's young, but she wasn't at the 2nd nest or the original nest. The strongest radio-signal came from the 2nd nest hole, so perhaps she is still further up where she escaped yesterday. A small clump (1/3 cup volume) of nest material had been pushed out. In the afternoon I cut a transect for a drift fence east of grid RC-1. It passes by station A-5. 40m of fencing would be minimal needed, 55 good, and 75m would cover all possible habitat. Reset all traps on RC-1 from 1730 to 1830 hrs. Aug. 9 0215 hrs - out checking traps on RC-1. It's cool (70's), some fog forming. Moon is overhead & Full. Relocated #1928 at station S,14 with Red Powder. Finished checking traps by 0350 hrs. The fog has obscured the moon now. Summary of Results for this morning: P. californicus: 7 captures (1 new) P. boylii : 13 " N. fusipes : 2 " Perognathus : 5 Captures (used Total 27 captures I left 2 traps set inside the hollow at #835 nest site. Her radio-signal was still coming from the 2nd nest area. Will return in daylight to check these.
