RIBBLE, D.D. 1987 PEROMYSCUS CALIFORNICUS (13) Hastings Natural History Reservation, Mendocino Co., Calif. Dec 1 Marco went out on Grid MC this am to get locations of #143 & 141. He couldn't get a signal from either animal, and he searched all around the grid for signals. Perhaps they have chewed through the radio mechanism. This pm we set traps on the top 2 rows of MC to try and catch these 2 animals. Also this am on Grid RC we radio-collared #1079 F (pregnant, probably lactating) and dusted her with NEW RED POWDER. Later this AM (11:00am) we got a signal from her between stations 6,14 & 5,14. It was coming from a log ~60cm diameter covered with blackberry, grasses, and poison oak. Dec 2 We didn't catch #143 or 141 today. We set traps on the top 2 rows of MC this afternoon to try and catch them. (11:30am) This afternoon we radio-tracked #1079 to a dead Sally snag 3m N. of 6,12. The snag is ~.3m dbh and stands ~3m high at which point it is broken. The strongest signal was received without the antenna at 2m above the ground. The bottom of the snag has a hole at ground level which could be used for entry. 22:30pm - caught #141 M at station 10,11 on Grid MC. The collar was in good shape except for a few gnawing on the collar and one corner of the radio with two wires exposed. It was chewed to the metal, so perhaps moisture inside shorted the radio (?). We removed the collar and released him in good shape. Dec 3 11:00 M Immature. TWD: 14.3g Ear-tagged. Grid MC-1, St. 9,11.
