RIBBLE, D.O. 1987 PEROMYSCUS CALIFORNICUS (6) Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. radio- Aug 7(cont) We also put a collar on #1928 this am. 1030h+ - returned to try & find #B35. I dug in deeper in the original nest cavern to locate her. I then heard a squeak next to my head, through the cracks in old ant (or termite?) diggings (2feet from below the nest). I could feel a nest with young. This was about ~1/2m above the original nest. I pried out some of the old ant diggings until the hole was barely big enough to reach my hand in. We tried in vain for over 30 min's to get #B35, but she was very aggressive and bit at any incoming objects (fingers, tongs, forceps). She was visible through the hole. We widened the hole with a crowbar and she escaped up a side tunnel. I could n't see her but could feel her. It was difficult because I could feel the babies attached (again at least 2, maybe 3), but didn't want to pull them. I could never quite get hold of #B35. Eventually (another 15 min) she climbed up higher and I couldn't feel her. We tried to put Metohane soaked cotton in the hole for 3min, but nothing happened. We then covered up this new nest site and went to radio-track #1928 (see description in Journal p.28). We came back after 15min and still no sign. We left after covering up the hole into the nest. I also found and collected 2 Peromyscus carcasses in this nest site. I should clean these and verify species and age. new animal #1930 F, mature, imperforate, parous -41.5g.
