RIBBLE, D.O. 1987 JOURNAL (13) Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif July 12. Started checking traps at 0550hrs this morning. It's clear, calm, low 60s. The moon is < full, but very bright in the western sky. It begins to get light around 0515, but not until 0545 is it light enough to work. Finished checking traps at 0712hrs. Results similar (poor) to capture results in June. Summary of captures: P.californicus - 1 capture P.boylei - 10 captures (1 new) P.huei - 2 captures N.fuscipes - 1 capture (new animal) Perognathus c. - 4 captures (2 new) Total - 14 total captures (4 new animals) Observed S.griseus at 5,14. It triggered one of the traps and was eating excess bait around the trap. Approached to within 10m. I laid out traps east of MC-1 to set later in the day. (Trapline A-1, starts 20m east of grid, ~15-20m between stations, 2traps per, runs along creek for 7 stations, then SE up first arroyo into Madrone (last 2 stations across fence off of Hastings). Trapline A-2), starts x 300m east of MC-1 along creek bed, ~15-20m between stations, 2traps per, trap #'s 281-300, ends at Hastings boundary fence. I spent most of the afternoon repairing an enclosure for behavioral observation. The boxes were here, apparently from MVZ. They will suffice for initial work (now on measurements of box, later). Today was clear, breezy, and warm (upper 80s). 1730hrs - set out 10traps at Big Creek 2nd crossing (eastern most crossing) for animals to use in behavioral work. 1900hrs - began resetting traps on MC-1, and trapsets A-1 & A-2. Finished by ~ 1710 hrs.
