RIBBLE, D.O. 1987 June 5 (cont) Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. I proceeded to 7.9 and found #B35 sitting in a trap. She fled upon arrival - at the base of the Madrone at this station were scattered with Red Pigment. This might be a second nest (?). There is a small pile of 15-20 pencil sized twigs assembled at the base. D550h- #1014, station 5,14 with ORANGE powder on ears, tail feet. Finished RC-1 @ 0625hrs. Finished checking MC-1 at 0745hrs. There is a light, low level of cloud cover, flowing fog on hill sides. Spent the morning hiking up Madrone Canyon and the first canyon off of it. Good F. californicus habitat throughout, particularly after the fence (~.25 mi up from grid MC-1). There were a few puddles of water up higher in the canyon, about 1 mile from the grid. Returned to set 2 traplines ups & down canyon from # MC-1. Each one starts ~25m from the grid boundary, extends up the south side, with 5 stations, 2 traps/station. I set them to see if there are any F. californicus adjacent to the grid, but not moving. Reset traps a little earlier today to make it into town for movie night. Reset MC-1 from 1500 to 1600hrs. A fledgling Black-headed Grosbeak was found up in the middle of the grid. in a bucketeye. It was an awkward flyer and continuously called. Reset traps on RC-1 from 1600 to 1700hrs. Set traps at station 9,7 inside madrone tank when # B35 appears to be nesting. It has been quite cool today (low 80's) due to a thin cloud cover all day - very pleasant. 2300h- out checking traps on RC-1. It's partially overcast, mid 70's. Moon(1/2) barely visible through clouds. 2330- nudged # B35 at 7.9. She escaped around and uphill from the madrone. June 0005hrs- finished RC-1. Not many animals & not that many closed traps
