RIBBLE, D.O 1987 Journal (10) Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. June 3 (cont) Kent and I reset traps on RC-1 and MC-1 between 1600; 1800hrs. Today seemed a little cooler, but still warm. June 4 hi=80 lo=45 0400hrs - out on RC-1 to check trails of dersted animals. It's foggy, calm, temp in 100's. The frog rolled in around 0340hrs (P.Kelly). (Sundewale) 0430 - redusted #189 with orange at 16,17. We follow her in circle to the NW, she eventually headed off to the South of the station under the fallen oak. Should release her in this area next time. 0450 - caught #1020 at 7,10 covered with red. The trap looks pigment, but it's looks like more pigment than from the traps above. No escaped the same spot as #835. 0550hrs - redusted #835 at 6,11. She escaped to the stream bank about station 6,10 (to South). I should check this area tonight with the black light. Finished checking traps on RC-1 at 0630. The fog & cool night seems to have made a difference in captures. 0640 - began on MC-1. It's still foggy. Finished checking MC-1 @ 0800. The fog has cleared. I placed #1073 in a cage in the lab for cooperation. 1300hrs - found her dead in cage and prepared as specimen (#746). She had hemorrhaged around her rt. rear leg, perhaps this was cause of death. This afternoon was cooler than the previous day, temp = low 80's. Reset traps on RC-1 from 1030 to 1800hrs. Set 4 Tomahawk traps and 1 large carnivor lure trap on the grid to see if I can catch what is setting off the traps. Reset traps on MC-1 from 1600 to 1850hrs. The moon is overhead and about ½ full. June 5 hi=81 lo=53 0405h - out on RC-1 to check traps. It's cool (upper 100's), calm, and clear. 0445 - redusted #835 w/red at 7,10. Again, she escaped to the bank of station 7,10 and I lost her trail. Eureka! I think I located the nest inside the stump of tree in the fallen oak debris. There is a small (50mm diameter) cup shaped nest made of grass in the bottom. Will come back later in the day for a more thorough investigation.
