Robbie, D.O. 1907 burwal 80 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co, Calif. Dec 15(cont). I began setting traps on MC-1 at 1430hrs. I placed a wadded up paper towel for nesting material in every trap, and every folding Sherman was either placed in a dry spot next to a tree or covered with a slab of balsa wood. A few stations (~10) were set with both traps side by side, covered with a single wood slab. This took longer than usual, finishing by 1715hrs. Due to darkness, I didn't set the 4 stations on Nov 11, and I didn't set any drift fence traps. 2200hs - out checking traps on MC. It's windy (gusts up to 40mph), cold (lower 40s), and snowing/raining. Generally sleety! Only caught 3 animals, so I finished checking traps by 2215hrs Dec 16. 0715hrs - out checking traps on MC. Weather didn't changed from last night - windy, rainy, cold. Finished checking traps by 0830hrs. Capture totals: P.taylorii-#4(3new); P.californicus-1; Sorex torbidusji -1 new; Total of 6 animals. I'm marking 4 folding Shermans from grid WZ, so I went to go check for them found 2 of them at station 4,lo with 2 mortalities (P.taylorii & N.fuscipes). Found the other two traps at 5,1o; which had never been set. Returned to lab to stuff these mortalities from grid WZ. It continued to rain off-and-on throughout the am into the afternoon. From 1430 to 1700hrs I set traps on RC & MC drift fences, and reset traps on grid MC. I put paper towels in all drift fence traps - Caught 2 small Eusctina in covered pit-fall unmaged traps. I released them on the opposite side of the fence. It rained lightly all afternoon.
