RIBBE, D.O. 1987 Journal Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Dec 7th: I had intended to set traps on the new grid in West Ravine (WRZ) this afternoon, but due to my late arrival it wasn't possible. When returning to lab I came across a group of 10-12 does "fiddling" on the slope north of the road to the lab (200m west of lab). 2 of the younger does were running circles around the group, jumping & kicking in the air. According to J. Griffin, these bouts of play behavior sometimes lead to aggressive encounters between older & younger does. The moon (3/4 full) rose around 2000hrs with clear, cold (40s) skies Dec 8 0700hrs - out checking traps - it's overcast, raining, temp in 40s. Started checking traps by 0810hrs, still raining lightly. Returned home to work on data analysis. By noon the rain stopped, but skies were overcast all day. From 1400 to 1615 hrs I set traps on grid WRZ (new grid in West Ravine). I covered most traps with balsa wood slats I got from Bob Jones. Since I didn't have enough to cover all traps, some stations (~15) were set with both traps next to one another and covered with 1 slab only. Reset drift line fences from 1630 to 1715 hrs. Clouds cleared after sunset tonight and moon rose around ??? 2015 hrs. Dec 9. 0630hrs - out checking traps. It's still dark this early and overcast. The clouds burned off with the sun this am. I used four P. californicus from WRZ at my truck, and returned them to their capture location.
