RIBBLE, D.O. 1987 Journal 75 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Dec 2 (cont) 2145hrs - out checking traps on RC. It's clear & very bright- mooned >3/4 full and directly overhead. Finished RC by 2230hrs and proceeded to MC to check grid traps. At station 10,11; caught #1941 ?A and removed malfunctioning radio-collar. (See spott). Returned home by 2300hrs Dec 3 0700hrs - out checking traps on MC. It's clear, and cool (upper 40's). On the grid we caught a new adult P.californicus (#1111) and (see spott) one of the young animals (#1110) from ♀1943. Both animals, were returned to lab to collect tissues. On RC, we removed the collar off of #1074 just in time - another animal had almost closed the wire collar off. Finished checking traps by 0925hrs. We also removed a M.californicus (#0130) from the west RC breft fence that had been burrowing under it. Marco released him at the "first crossing" along Big Creek. Summary of trap results: RC 2 (pm) 3 (am) # individuals P.californicus 1 capture 4 captures 5 P.boylei 5 "(new) 7 "(new) 9 Microtus 2 " 1 " 3 Penognathus 3 " 2 " 3 R.mesabolus 1 " 0 1 ---------------- Total 12 " 14 21 ind. Returned to lab to bleed new animals & stuff Scaf. I spent most of the afternoon, working on a seminar talk for Saturday. The afternoon was clear, sunny, and warm. We reset all traps on RC, MC drift fence, and 2 top rows on MC from 1545 to 1630hrs.
