Bibble,D.O. 1987 Journal (3) Hastings Natural History Reservation, Mendocino Co., Calif March 26 Arrived at Hastings today around 1300hrs. Will be here until the 29th to trap grids RC-1 and MC-1, and to hopefully locate nests. It's clear, calm, mid-70s today. The hills are mostly green, the buckeyes's snowberry have greened up, and a few flowers are blooming. The creek through MC-1 is dry. Set traps on MC-1 from 1400 to 1600h. There was no visible Peromyscus activity in the two nest boxes I set out in Feb. I should relocate those this weekend. Set traps on RC-1 from 1610 to 1710. Again, no activity in the single nest box on this grid. 2200hrs - checking traps on MC-1. It's clear, calm, and cool (~low50s). There is no moon. Finished checking traps at 2330h. Note number of new P.californicus, presumably born on grid, and lack of P.boylei. March 27 Hi: 72 Low: 35 The sun rises around 0630, but it is light by 0540. Started checking traps on RC-1 at 0630. It's clear, calm, and cool (upper 30s). There was frost on the truck windshield. Finished checking traps at 0815on RC-1. Note that 2 animals were dusked. Finished checking traps on MC-1 by 100hrs. Note that 3 animals were dusked. It warmed up quickly this morning with a slight breeze (5-10mph) and clear skies. Returned to cabin to catch up on school work. 1400h - back on RC-1. Set 2 trap transects extending east (Transect A) and west (Transect B) from grid along Robertson Creek. Each transect consists of 10 stations (1-10), 2 traps per, 15-20m between stations. Traps baited with "Cob" mixture from P.Kelley. Finished resetting traps on grid at 1550h. Set traplines out from MC-1 in the same fashion as on RC-1. Finished resetting MC-1 at 1800hrs Caught # 1024, P.californicus at station 9,10. Released it in good shape.
