Rubble, D.O. 1987 Journal (2) Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Feb 1 (cont) I searched for the nest of # 484 (? lactating), at station 9, 10. I dug around a lot where she escaped, but it must have been a temporary refuge site- no nest was found. Put a nest box in the space I had dug out, buried under rocks, soil, & litter. Tried the same with # 1003, at station 10, 14- Same results. Put another nest box there beneath shrubs. Finished resetting traps on MC-1 at 1700hrs, and went to RC-1. Submerged a nest box above (~2m away) station 6, 11. Finished resetting traps 1800hrs. On the way home I set 5 Shermans along Big Creek at second road crossing (same location as last night). 2100hrs- out on MC-1 w/ P.Kelley - it's partly cloudy, calm, temp ~50s. Dusked # 843 w/ green; she left a beautiful trail to the rice, but didn't circle around to her nest area. I checked on her later (~30min), but she still hadn't circled around back to here nest. Finished checking traps at 2:30ohr. Feb 2 0645hrs - it's overcast, calm, upper 40s this morning. M.Staubach is helping me this morning. Finished MC-1 around 0830hrs. Caught 1 seroc, Newportia, P.bonfii, and L.maniculatus in traps along Big Creek, all released untagged. Finished closing RC-1 by 1000hrs. Returned to lab & loaded up. Left for Berkeley by 1100hrs Tilden Regional Park [Tilden Nature Center], Contra Costa Co., Calif. Feb. 13 At Tilden for 107 field trip to watch Brown Towees. Found a dead (cat #757) Scapanus latimanus in grass field, surrounded by mixed oak woodland. Found one hole in skin in left thorax with left shoulder hemorrhaged. Rained heavily the night before, and cloudy, rain-off's on this morning.
