Ribble, D.D. 987 Journal 49 Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co. Calif. Nov. 3 (cop). Roset traps on RC-1; drift lines from 1530 to 1630 hrs. Had a recapture on the drift fence (see drift fence data). Also, I sunk 2 coffee cans in the ground on either side of the fence at E-7 to catch the Scapanus (hopefully). Set traps on MC-1 drift fences from 1645 to 1715 hrs. 2145 hrs - out checking traps on RC-1. It's clear, calm, cool (low 50's), and moon is almost full overcast. Finished checking traps by 2300 hrs. Nov. 4 0630hrs - out checking traps on MC-1 drift line. It's overcast, breezy, and cool (40's). It rained this an at 0500hrs. Clouds moved in from the east. Continued to rain lightly through the morning. Dusted #1079 (pregnant) with RED powder. Finished checking traps by 0800 hrs. Bled #190 & at truck and released at drift fence. Started to rain again as I finished up. (26:03 pm) Summary of results this am: P. californicus : 5 captures 5 (live) P. boylii : 8 captures (2 new) 8 (live) Perognathus : 6 captures (6 live) R. megalotis : 2 captures 2 (live) N. fuscipes : 1 ' 0 M. cratous : 1 # 2 S. townsendii : 1 " (live) 1 (live) S. latimanus : 0 1 -------------------------------- Total 24 captures 26 captures Returned to lab to process blood & prepare S. latimanus. It quit raining around 1300hrs and remained overcast the rest of the day. In the afternoon I sunk 8 additional coffee cans on the drift fence east of RC-1. I put 2 one either side of and the fence at stations (2m sof) E-2, E-4, E-6, E-8; plus the 2 at E-7. I then painted ~10m of the fence with a new mixture - dark grey. This color will suffice for cutting down the reflection.
