RIBBLE, D.O. 1987 Journal 48 Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Nov. 2 Arrived back to Hastings around 1500 hrs. In the span of a week, the rain has caused the hills to start turning green. Foothill's grasses have finally started growing after a long, dry summer. J. Griffin said Hastings received 7.10 inches of rain in the preceding 10 days. Today is partly cloudy, cool (low 70's). It sprinkled a few times this afternoon. Set traps on RC-1 (gud ; drift fence) from 1530 to 1730 h (PST - off of DST). Most of the non-folding Sherman's had mold in them which I brushed out. It's dark by 1545 hrs, just as the moon rises (~3/4 full). This evening was cool and clear. Since it doesn't look like rain, I'll wait until AM to check traps. Nov 3 0630 hrs - Out checking traps on RC-1. It's clear, calm, temp in mid 40's. Light frost on roofs and in meadows. It's light enough to work at 0615 hrs. Great results this AM. Caught all 3 pups of #835's debler and 2 new P. Californicus - bled all these. Didn't finish checking traps until 1030 hrs. Summary of results: P. Californicus: Captured (2 new) P. boylii : 13 captures (8 new) Perognathus : 5 " (0 new) N. Fuscipes : 1 " (0) Microtus : 4 " (2 new) Stawbridgii 2 " (2 marked) Total : 33 captures. Returned to lab to process blood's stuff sooner. Screwed up with blood - washed with H2O & spun the blood. Realized what I had done after spinning, so didn't decant and freeze the non-washed hemolyzate. Today was clear, slight breeze, temp in low 70's.
