Southern Ocean.
20th S. Lat. 43° 27' E. Lon. 35° 55'
Two whales were seen today, and great
numbers of birds followed in our wake.
The kelp so characteristic of these south-
erm latitudes now begins to appear in
small quantities.
21st S. Lat. 43° 28' E. Lon. 39° 55'
22nd S. Lat. 43° 29' E. Lon. 41° 33'
The temperature of the air is now about 50°
and that of the water 42° - so that we
find it comfortable to shut ourselves
up in our rooms, where writing and
study are prosecuted with that zeal
which cold weather always gives to such
pursuits.
A school of porpoises
passed today of which one was taken
and proved to be the small white
belly'd Dolphin (?) - there was a dark
stripe crossing the white sides ob-
liquely but nearly longitudinally.

A cast for temperature taken today
showed at 100 fms 39° - at 1000 fms - 36° - Surface 42°
24th S. Lat. 43° 40' E. Lon. 50° 29'
The curious blue Sea-pigeon noticed on
the 10th inst., which single individual (?)
