The road is rough and dangerous,
in some places, winding around the
sides of nearly perpendicular precipices
with width not more than sufficient
to form a pathway for a single horse.
Among the various grand points in the
scene was seeing the clouds beneath
us. The whole day was occupied
by this excursion, giving scarce time
for the collection of a few moths
and grasshoppers at the summit.
Thursday, July 14th Funchal
This day I went on a fishing excur-
sion along the coast to the eastward.
The bait consisted of a bright red shrimp
(Lysmata ?) which was caught in great
numbers by the fishermen in conical
traps of basket-work which they had
set in 20 fms overnight. A great
variety of beautifully colored fish
was taken, mostly with small hooks
and lines which sank with diffi-
culty to the [illegible] bottom, in 10 - 25 fms.
