Monday, July 11. Funchal.
Several fishermen, boys and idlers whom I
had engaged brought me many species of
the great variety of fish, for which
Madeira is so justly celebrated, and
also a number of shore-crabs and other
animals of interest.
Tuesday, July 12 Funchal
Made a general examination of the sea-
shore, both on foot and in boats. It is
invariably rocky, either by ledges or large
clean boulders and small pebbles; -- no
sand or mud occurring. Among the
smaller pebbles at a slight depth a
Nereis occurred, but no other worms,
though so abundant, on every sandy sea-
sure, occurred here above low water
mark. The rocks and boulders between
tide marks supported numerous specimens
of a species of Patella, and one of
Menodonta, with still greater numbers
of a rough ash colored Purpura. A few
