September 1855 Encampment at Saniarine Sr. Seals were very numerous in the harbor, and the natives are usually engaged in taking them, in their "Kyaks" This frail boat, made of seal-skins, with a small aperture at the middle of its deck to admit the body of a man, - I soon learnt to manage, and found very useful in duck-shooting in the water, or in cruising about the straits alone, our heavy dugout being almost cumbersome to a single person desirous of frequent landings. The Viceress arrived in the Straits on the 6th, and anchored in her old berth. We of the shore party met cleverly to go on board until the last moment, remained in the boats more than a week longer; the encampment not being broken up until the 13th. The weather was now bad, foggy, or rainy most of the time. The scurvy had made its appearance on board, and every endeavor was made to procure fresh provisions, pastes sent to collect berries etc. Mr Brooks in the launch made an excursion up the straits and communicated with the highest chief in this vicinity; obtaining some new-deer meat etc. On the 17th the weather being clear, we got underway and left the Straits.
