May 1835 Simoda Japan the 23rd On the 26th the Governor (Prince of Iddu) visited Com. Rodgers, and was received on board our ship with the customary salute. The "Caroline E. Foster" arrived from Petropaul- ski. This schooner brought Mr Reed & Doty, with their families, and several other gentlemen from San Francisco two or three months ago. She was chartered by Mr Reed, and has just returned from carrying home a portion of the crew of the wrecked Russian frigate. We experienced much bad weather while here. The thermometer ranged between 60 & 75° F. averaging 70° in the day-time. My marine explorations at this port were by no means as extensive as I had hoped, as I had contracted a severe cold which affecting my lungs, prevented me from going about much on the water or on the wet beaches. From what I saw I cannot speak favorably of this as a good place for making collections, - there was no good beach or rich sea-bottom in the vicinity.
